Producer Information
Juan Gil is a wine producer in southeastern Spain’s Jumilla region, and is one of the most prominent in the region. It makes a range of reasonably priced red wines from the Monastrell grape variety, which is synonymous with this part of Spain. Jumilla’s hot, dry, continental climate, and the dry limestone soils in the Juan Gil vineyards are an excellent terroir for Monastrell, which has formed the basis for the region’s full-bodied red wines for decades. Monastrell predominates here, and some of the older vines are around 40 years old, providing a complexity not seen in wines made from younger vines. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also planted in the vineyard and are sometimes used as minor blending partners. Juan Gil makes a range of wines, the most important of which are the 4 Meses, the 12 Meses and the 18 Meses wines all named for the number of months they spent aging in oak barrels. There is also a white wine made of Moscatel, and a range of other Monastrell-dominant wines. The Gil family also produces wines from the celebrated Bodegas El Nido estate (in partnership with Australian-based winemaker Chris Ringland) in the region. The Gil family also owns and operates several other brands in wine regions across Spain, including Bodegas Tridente (formerly Bodegas Triton, which was initially set up in partnership with US-based Spanish importer Jorge Ordez) in Castilla y Len’s Tierra del Vino de Zamora, and Lagar de Condesa in Galicia’s Rias Baixas.
